“My Life in Motion” was the name Nelson Makamo gave to his most daring canvas: a Jet Black Metallic Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé transformed into a mobile masterpiece. In this unprecedented collaboration with Porsche South Africa, Nelson hand‑painted select interior and exterior elements of the car, turning a childhood dream into a moving testament to identity, community, and artistic courage.

Growing up in rural Limpopo, Nelson imagined one day owning his own 911. Years later, he acquired one, not just as a vehicle, but as a canvas. He painted the rear bumper, side mirrors, seat mouldings, dash inserts, door panels, and even the parking brake console. Each component reflects his visual language, vibrant strokes, textures, and meaning all lacquered and assembled with Porsche’s precision.

In one door panel, Makamo etched the word “Mma”, meaning “Mother” in Sepedi, a first in his body of work. This quiet tribute acknowledges his mother’s unwavering belief in him and honors the spiritual foundation upon which his creativity stands. It's a subtle yet deeply meaningful gesture, reserved for those who understand the weight of origin.

On the rear bumper, a crowd of faceless figures merges into a sea of presence, representing the diverse communities that shaped Nelson. He designed it to read as both African and universal. “I want you to see yourself in the car,” he said, reminding us that true art defies labels and belongs to whomever it touches.

There was no brief. No precedent. Just imagination and a commitment to try. Before the applause, there was vulnerability. But it’s precisely that bravery that sets pioneers apart. Porsche called it “worthy of any gallery”; for Nelson, it was simply the next chapter in his spiritual journey, a reminder that art is movement, not immobility.

Toby Venter, CEO of Porsche SA, reflected:
“Working with Nelson Makamo has been inspirational, this commission is on a level we’ve never seen before. A truly bespoke art installation, gallery‑ready in every sense.”
