In 2024, Discovery and South African Airways (SAA) invited Nelson Makamo to transform select airport lounges at OR Tambo and Cape Town Domestic into cultural way-stations. This was part of SAA’s 90th anniversary celebration, and Makamo’s piece, “Vision of a Limitless Future”, was chosen to grace the welcoming walls of travelers from all walks of life. Originally featured on the cover of Time magazine’s 2019 “Art of Optimism” issue, this portrait is now more than an image, it’s a moment of pause, reflection, and reconnection within the flow of travel.

Why It Matters

Art in Motion: Before people move, they stop long enough to meet a hopeful gaze. Makamo’s portrayal of a child’s resolute eyes became the quiet social statement in a high traffic space.
